Stop Scams UK hosts annual event to ‘get ahead of fraudsters’
Stop Scams UK welcomed senior leaders from the banking, technology, and telecoms sectors to our annual event where we discussed the crucial need for cross-sector collaboration in stopping scams at source.
Hosted by Nationwide, the event highlighted the strong commitment across industries to come together, sharing innovation, resources, and insights, as we work to outpace fraudsters and make meaningful progress in the fight against scams.
“Our annual event has shown how keen our members are to seize this time to work together, sharing innovation, resource and insight across sectors to get ahead of fraudsters and stopping scams at source,” said Stop Scams UK CEO Mark Tierney.
The audience heard from Debbie Crosbie, CEO of Nationwide Building Society, and Matt Hammerstein, CEO of UK Corporate Bank at Barclays, who shared their insight on the importance of data-sharing, and gave a passionate account of the work Stop Scams UK does with its members.
“Fraud is the biggest crime this country faces – it’s crucial that Government, regulators, banks and tech firms all work together to prevent fraud from happening and stop scams at their source,” said Hammerstein.
“Cross-sectoral data sharing will be key to our success – the better we can understand these criminals and how they operate, the greater chance we have of protecting UK consumers and businesses from their crimes.”
The audience also heard from Dave Harcourt (BT), Amanda Storey (Google), and Jim Winters (Nationwide), on the importance of a tri-sector approach to combating fraud and the need for international co-operation.
“It was great to welcome Stop Scams UK at our London offices for their annual event where we discussed how we can collaborate to better protect customers,” said Winters, Head of Economic Crime at Nationwide.
“Excellent initiatives are happening but the scale of the problem shows we need a new approach.”
Minister of State with Responsibility for Fraud, Lord Sir David Hanson also offered his support, commenting: “Crime is becoming increasingly online-enabled with technology continuing to play a greater role in crime and letting criminals target more victims at scale, so it is vital that we work together to harness the power of technology to protect the public from harm.
“I am pleased to see that Stop Scams UK is working innovatively, across sectors to tackle fraud and to help take the fight to the criminals.”
